My Campaign Stategy

The campaign is aimed at young boys aged 9-11 to encourage them to read more and interact with book.

The placement of the campaign is an advertising billboard to be placed pitch side at the stadium grounds of all the Premier League football teams.

The majority of football fans are boys and I am confident the campaign will reach the audience it is aimed at whether they see it on the pitch at a live football match, on television, online, or in a magazine.

I have 9 weeks to research and produce my campaign 02/03/09 - 29/04/09.

The advertisment will appear from August - May. Thats 10 months the campaign will remain at the home grounds of each pitch. During that time millions of people including the target audience will see these ads.

My concept will be produced utilising typography.

My colour palate will be based on the colours of all the Premiership League football
teams’ home shirts.

The tone I am working with is light hearted and fun but also informative at the same time without sounding too educational. I want to maintain the interest of the audience.

London Bookstore chain Waterstone's is supporting its scheme encouraging primary school children to read and share books with a campaign created by Wax Communications.

Tying in with the National Year of Reading, the chain's Big Book Bank initiative will give UK school children a voucher for a free, new book from Waterstone's in return for bringing their own books to school and depositing them in 'the big book bank' for other pupils to share and read.

Children will be encouraged to write a review of their book before putting it in the bank as part of a literary exercise during class time.

With the campaign due to launch on September 28, Wax has created a range of marketing resources including leaflets that will be delivered to 23,000 primary schools across the country, encouraging them to sign up.

Participating schools will receive a big book bank display kit, designed by Wax, including posters to use in their school, illustrating how the system works, as well as vouchers for the children.
Teachers will be able to download lesson plans and activity sheets from a dedicated
Waterstone's website.

Wax Communications is familiar with socially responsible campaigns, having also delivered Sainsbury's Active Kids promotion, which rewards schools with vouchers for new sports equipment, classes or field trips.

Catherine Allison, account director at Wax, said: "The scheme has received fantastically positive feedback from teachers, children and parents where it has piloted and we are sure it will be a huge success nationally."

‘Harry Potter’ campaign is Waterstones’ biggest yet
Waterstone's is claiming its most successful online campaign yet with a promotion involving Harry Potter.

The book retailer is using its competition microsite waterstones.com/whatsyourstory, to showcase an exclusive short story by Harry Potter author JK Rowling and drive massive awareness of the brand's latest ‘What's Your Story?’ promotion.

The site, created by Codecomputerlove, received more than 70,000 visitors in the first 20 hours of Rowling's story going live online last week.

It has been getting thousands more hits daily from fans keen to read Rowling's 800-word prequel to the Harry Potter series. The competition has attracted nearly 4000 story cards so far.

JK Rowling's exclusive short story is one of a number of stories that were auctioned off at Sotherby's, raising more than £47K for charity, as part of Waterstone's ‘What's Your Story?’ competition. The Harry Potter prequel raised £25K alone.

Bespoke stories written by the top authors especially for the promotion are being displayed in an online gallery, in store windows and will be published in a limited edition book.

Waterstone's promotion is searching for budding writers to be published alongside JK Rowling, Doris Lessing, Michael Rosen, Nick Hornby,Sebastian Faulks, Lauren Child, Tom Stoppard and Irvine Welsh.

To be in with a chance of winning consumers simply submit their story. It can be from three words long to three hundred - just as long as it fits onto the story card template.

This latest promotion follows the success of Waterstone's Save Harry Potter online petition that achieved more than 500,000 signatures last year.

"Discover Something New" is the strapline for Waterstone's. It plays a significant role in the current campaign advertising Waterstone's books.

* CH1 & Partners created the advertising campaign.

* It was created to communicate the concept of learning and the fact that you may learn something new from reading a book.

* Neil Armstrong informed the campaigns creation and by being the first man to walk on the moon he was making a huge discovery, Something new that nobody had ever seen before.

* The advertisement was only seen online.

* It’s a sort of comforting feeling when the consumer sees the ad. A reassurance of the quality of Waterstone’s by seeing an iconic personality Like Neil Armstrong endorsing the service

* The campaign is a video.

* The colour tone of the whole campaign is neutral, using dull earth tones like to remain relevant to the theme of the moon landing no use of bright colours

* It is a video using old, original footage of Neil Armstrong landing on the moon

* The copy seen at the end of the advertisement is a statement.

* The tone is educational and influencing. The use of Neil Armstrong walking on the moon is meant to lead the consumer into believing that by reading and learning you can become anything.

* The USP is that Waterstone’s sell quality books and by using a well known celebrity to endorse the service it shows a quality personality associated with Waterstone’s books and that type of exposure goes in favour of the product and consumers are more drawn to using the service.

I must admit I found the Waterstone's "Discover something new" TV campaign rather baffling. The first ad I reviewed featured Neil Armstrong refusing to descend from the space capsule. The question I have is: "What is he waiting for?" Is the correct interpretation that he's waiting for someone to come along and discover his biography in Waterstone's, or is it that he's waiting for someone to catch him in the act and record it for posterity? It isn't quite clear. The second ad depicting a scene from a crime novel is equally ambiguous. Perhaps someone would kindly explain to me which is the correct interpretation! However, I'm sure it will still remind everyone to buy their Christmas books from Waterstone's.

What is a Strapline?
A strapline, in advertising, is a ’slogan’ used to identify brands (i.e Tesco’s ‘Every little helps’).

WHO PUTS STRAPLINES TOGETHER / WHAT IS THE PROCESS ?
There is no real science to writing the great strapline. Being witty, being hard hitting, playing around with metaphors, rhymes, alliteration, and so on, are all good ways to start off / good approaches in general. Copywriters spend much time thinking up straplines in the bus, for example, or in the bath. But in practice, they will spend more time thinking up straplines in the office - in brainstorming sessions, for example, where they will write out many, many different straplines and strapline variations. It’s generally a slog.

ESSENTIAL QUALITIES OF THE STRAPLINE:

The strap line has to be eye catching. It has to be brief to hold the attention of the target audience because they are young boys the strap line needs to be something they are going to take notice of not something they will get bored of before they finish reading because its too long.
